“In practice, most protestants, when they acquired the government, merely substituted the King for the Pope, and thus secured neither liberty of private judgement nor a democratic method of deciding doctrinal questions.” — Bertrand Russell
There are many flavors of “protestant”, and they all hate each other.
Not surprisingly, Protestants, for centuries, were horribly violent until secular government forced them to chill the fuck out and stop burning people, drowning people, and accusing everyone with a different point of view of witch-craft.
All of that said, let’s remind ourselves that fundamentalism is a HUMAN trait, not one confined to Protestants. Burning people at the stake was a time honored tradition among catholics for nearly a thousand years. And Isis has revived a level of religious fanaticism we can’t allow ourselves to be blind to.
But here in America, OUR fundamentalists are of the protestant variety, as a rule.
It should never be forgotten that the American separation of church and state was championed by persecuted protestant religious groups — NOT by atheists and deists. Protestant-on-Protestant violence was the norm. The Protestant reformation did NOT save us from Religious intolerance — it just gave us more ways to be intolerant.
The most vocal of our American protestants are the very people who are the most opposed to science, reason, and secular government. Fundamentalist Protestants love to hoist the American flag, but the true Secular-Spirit of America makes them sick to their stomach — they have their heads deeply in the sand on this one. America was founded by a bunch of deists who disliked the protestant churches and groups around them. Being a Deist does not make you a Protestant, no matter how much Ann Coulter attempts to twist the facts on Fox News. In spirit, Deists are much closer to agnostics and atheists than to any organized religious group.
Our American system was literally founded by deists who were deeply weary of organized religion — this fact seems to have slipped passed the radars of most American fundamentalists.
America is basically the opposite of a Christian nation — which is precisely what keeps it TOLERANT of any religious group.
No wonder the Fundamentalists are so pissed off…
Now go lift something heavy,
